The Data Architect (DA) is a key contributor and leader within the Business Intelligence/Data Warehouse environment at Hennepin County. The DA will develop, manage and update data models. This includes both physical and logical models for the Data Warehouse/Business Intelligence environment which can include data marts, operational data stores, staging areas and source systems. 
 
The Data Architect in this position must have both technical aptitude and proven solid client communication skills as this role moves equally between the Information Technology technical and business tracks. This role is key in translating business requirements into long term architectural solutions that are reusable, extendable and sustainable. The DA role performs critical data profiling of source systems to support subsequent Extract Transfer Load (ETL) processes and architectures.

The primary responsibilities of this position include: 
 
Design of the data warehouse / business intelligence architecture for the entire enterprise which includes all logical and physical models; work with the DBA's for capacity planning, create data definition language (ddl) as well as backup/recovery. 
Design of technical processes, business processes, and application metadata architecture. 
Lead discussions on and determine technical process changes and capture and present business metadata while working with the application metadata architects. 
Model staging, storage and presentation layers of the DW/BI environment. 
Determine current and historical data needs and manage data changes. 
Partner with ETL Architect to analyze source systems via Data Profiling and Change Data Capture (CDC) strategies. 
Manage and run JAD sessions with business clients and other technical staff in order to understand business requirements needs to assist BA's with technical translations. 
Interpret business and functional requirements and to create technical requirements; create logical and physical models for both current designs and new development. 
Work within an agile environment and managing two full lifecycle development projects at one time. 
Perform model development walkthroughs with both Transactional and OLAP models (RDBMS, ODS, CUBE, DM/DS, Normalization/Denormalization etc.) Create both Dimensional data marts and CIF data stores.Develop technical specifications from impact and source systems analysis; perform data profiling. 
Work with ETL and understand data granularity and how it relates to the DW/BI environment; understand Informatica 7+ and or Cognos 8 capabilities. 
 
The IDEAL CANDIDATE will have: 
 
Bachelor's degree in computer science or closely related field. 
Three or more years of Data Warehousing and/or Business Intelligence programming experience including one year at the senior level in a mid to large-scale data processing environment appropriate to the area of specialization, such as: capacity planning and data analysis, database management systems, or Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence development. 
Previous experience working with complex solutions combining communications, documentation and development efforts. 
Proven written and verbal communication skills. 
Experience working with both data and process modeling. 
Experience with Business Intelligence packages/suites (i.e. Cognos 8) and how they interact with a DW environment. 
 Expert level experience with the following; PowerDesigner 11x+ (or Erwin 4.x), Visio, MS Query Analyzer, MS Office, Lotus Notes, MS Sql 2000+ or Oracle.
