Description 

 

Rockwell Collins will be accepting applications for a Mechanical Inspector, 2nd Shift to work at the Cedar Rapids, Iowa facility. Selected candidates will be required to pass a series of tests, including trigonometry, mechanical and blueprint reading and knowledge test to qualify for the Labor Grade 8. Additional tests are provided for the Labor Grade 9 requirement but not necessarily needed for consideration for this opening. Qualified candidates will be required to fully pass a background check and pre-employment drug screen.


Performs a wide variety of highly-skilled duties required in the precision inspection of jigs, fixtures, dies, templates, special tools, piece parts, and parts from outside vendors. Selects and sets up proper tools and precision equipment required to execute assigned inspection duties. Works from complicated mechanical and sheet metal blueprints, specifications, sketches, schematics, drawings, oral and/or written procedures, or engineering information and must have a thorough knowledge of shop mathematics including trigonometry. Records inspection evaluation and results on Inspection Report and properly identifies material and finishes. Responsible for decisions as to quality and usability involving considerable judgment and job knowledge.

Monitors all electrical and mechanical parts received from various vendors in accordance with specifications and procedures. Must have knowledge of identification of parts, color code, family part numbers, paint and plating finishes. Sets up and operates a variety of precision electrical and/or mechanical measuring instruments and checking devices such as surface plate, gauges, and test equipment to monitor parts/components, dimensions, gears, hardness, thickness, and smoothness to meet specifications and Quality Control Standards. Visually monitors parts for deformities, appearance, markings, and finish. Responsible for count, weight, and identity. Prepares and maintains all related records and paperwork as required.

Responsible for orderly arrangement, storage, location and issuing of all items in the Fabrication Gauge Room.

Checks, cleans and adjusts all types of precision instruments and gauges, both production and inspection. Makes repairs when practical.

Sets up gauges and checking fixtures for checking production parts.

Maintains close inspection of gauges for wear and breakage, requisitioning replacements and maintaining surplus stock of commonly used items.

Issues and receives instruments, gauges, etc.

Must be capable of working with Quality Control and Engineering personnel.

Assists in training, planning, and directing the work of eighteen (18) same or lower grade inspectors.

Duties are performed under minimum supervision.

Capable of moving and/or handling heavy parts, material or equipment up to 54 pounds. Must meet the established essential visual and color perception requirements to perform this job.

Starting wage will be dependent upon candidate passing and qualifying at either a Labor Grade 8 ($17.20) or Labor Grade 9 ($18.18). 

 
 

 Qualifications 

 

This job requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 7 or more years of work experience specifically related to job requirements. 

US Citizenship or Permanent Resident (Green Card) is required.
