Job Title: Spring Intern in the Registrar's Office

Overview:
The New York Public Librarys Registrars Office (part of the Preservation Department), is offering an internship to a qualified NYU Museum Studies student.
The student will receive comprehensive training in museum registration methods and learn the procedures for organizing exhibitions in cultural institutions. In addition, the student will learn various elements for the processing of outgoing loans from the Librarys collections.
General Description:
- Process incoming domestic and foreign loans (art objects, books, manuscripts) for temporary exhibitions at NYPL.
- Work with curators in the Library (including Library of the Performing Arts, Science, Business and Industry Library and Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture).
- Work with curators in other domestic and foreign cultural institutions as well as private collectors.
- Work with customs brokers, fine arts packers and conservators.
- Maintain exhibition databases in Access.
- Heavy correspondence and telephone work to check on status of loans.
- Maintain current technical and administrative procedures regarding packing, shipping, condition reporting and insuring works of art.
- Condition reporting loan objects, including digital camera photographs for documentation.
- Handling, storing and identifying materials to be included in exhibitions.
- Work with art handlers in the Exhibitions Program with delivery and placement of materials for display into appropriate exhibition cases.
- Take digital images of all loan objects and materials from Librarys collections which are going out on loan.
- Detailed incoming and outgoing condition reporting for loans to exhibitions as well as NYPL materials for loan.
- Review of AAM Facilities Reports from institutions borrowing materials from NYPL.
- Observing and learning fine arts soft packing of Library materials for local transit.
- Accompanying Registrarial staff from the Humanities and Social Sciences Library to return materials to the collections. This will include the Library for the Performing Arts, Schomburg Center and Science and Industry Library.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Good general computer skills; knowledge of Microsoft Word, Filemaker Pro, Access and Excel necessary.
- Excellent communication, writing and organizational skills.
- Ability to work with deadlines.
