General Description:


The Registrar's Office at The New York Public Library, is offering an internship to graduate museum studies students. Training in Museum Registration Methods by Senior Registrial staff in the Exhibitions Program Office will provide an overview of procedures required for working in a major museum with humanities collections. Other duties include:


- Process incoming domestic and foreign loans (art objects, books, manuscripts) for temporary exhibitions at NYPL.- Work with curators in the Library (including Library of the Performing Arts, Science, Business and Industry Library and Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture).- Work with curator in other domestic and foreign cultural institutions as well as private collectors as well other domestic and foreign cultural institutions. - Work with customs brokers, fine arts packers, conservators.- Maintain exhibition database in Filemaker Pro.- Heavy correspondence and telephone work to check on status of loans.- Will become familiar with current technical and administrative procedures regarding packing, shipping, condition reporting and insuring works of art.- Condition reporting of all loan objects, including use of digital camera for documentation.- Learn about the handling, storage and identification of materials to be included in exhibitions

- Good general computer skills; knowledge of Microsoft Word, Filemaker Pro and Excel necessary.- Excellent communication, writing and organizational skills.- Must be able to work with deadlines.
