Job Title: Education and Communications Coordinator
Location: Concord, NH
Company: Service Employees International Union
Duties require the development of education and leadership development programs for members, as well as identifying and coordinating other education and training opportunities for members that exist outside the local. Will include developing new methods and programs to educate and train members on the union’s governance, mission, and political/legislative activities. Performs work of a professional and specialized nature involving internal and external communications and educational programs. Work involves planning, writing, and editing regular and special publications for both print and web based media.
Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the Communication Administrator.
Supervision Exercised
Exercises some supervision over clerical personnel regarding correspondence, preparation of projects and the development of materials for specialized purposes.
Example of Duties
Explore and develop new methods and programs to educate members and the public on key union issues. Development and implementation of steward training in conjunction with the Stewards’ Committee. Development and implementation of education activities that directly support the interests of union members and the mission of the union. Work with other staff and members to identify, recruit, develop and train volunteer rank-and-file leaders. Identify members’ interests and needs for education and training, and inform members about the availability of educational activities. Identify, coordinate and publicize scholarship programs for which union members and their dependents are eligible. Collaborate with the public information officer, organizing and field staff in developing the union message for activities and campaigns. Provide political, legislative and general organizational support through the development of special materials. Responsible for the design, editing, layout and production of the SEA News. Responsible for the majority of literature production and desktop publishing. Responsible for maintaining the union’s Web site in collaboration with the public information officer. Maintain historical files. Work with various committees as assigned.
Job Qualifications: Experience as an educator (with emphasis on adult education) or as a union representative/organizer is highly desirable. Four years experience in media writing, editing, and production work (newspapers, magazines, journals, or electronic), preferably with a degree in Journalism, Communications or a related field, and experience in the field of organized labor.
Compensation: Starting salary $ 45,623. Benefits include fully paid health, dental, and 401K.
